Corpus Christi is the county seat of Nueces CountyGR6 and a coastal city located in the U.S. state of Texas. It is part of the region known as South Texas. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, the city had a population of 277,454 people (though a July 1, 2004 estimate placed the population at 281,196), making it the eighth-largest city in the state. The translation of the city's name is Body of Christ, given to the settlement by the Spanish, in honor of the Blessed Sacrament (Eucharist). The city is often referred to as "The Sparkling City by the Sea," particularly in literature promoting tourism. Locals and natives often just call it Corpus. Since 2003, the city has earned numerous awards including: All-America City 2003 Digital City One of the best cities to stretch your paycheck One of the least depressed cities in the nation The city is home to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. Dinner at Dooky Chase

Dinner service is back at Dooky Chase Restaurant (2301 Orleans Ave., 821-0535), the Sixth Ward culinary landmark and home base of chef Leah Chase.

Hours are limited to Friday evenings for now, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and the restaurant still serves lunch Tuesday through Friday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Plane diverted after passenger lights cigarette in cabin

A Continental Airlines flight traveling from Houston to California had to be diverted here Tuesday evening because of an “unruly passenger” who reportedly lit a cigarette in the cabin and refused to put it out then fought with a flight attendant, officials said. According to the Continental Airlines website, the flight was supposed to be non-stop from Houston to Ontario, Calif., and arrived about two hours late because of the diversion.


Oil worker dies after Wilson County crash

An Oklahoma oil worker has died after a crash in Wilson County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. Benjie Burke III was driving his 2005 Honda Accord north in a southbound lane on U.S. 181 just after 4 a.m. Saturday when he collided with an oncoming car near mile post 526, a DPS spokeswoman said.
